Day after questioning,Ubale dropped from key government panel

A day after former IAS officer and Tata Realty managing director and CEO Sanjay Ubale was questioned by the CBI in connection with the 2G spectrum scam, the Maharashtra government decided to drop him from a key panel. The government panel was formed last month under the chief secretary to deal with issues such as attracting investment, developing infrastructure and eradicating malnutrition in the state.

“We had initially named Ubale on the committee, but later some bureaucrats argued there would be a conflict of interest. Therefore we decided there would be no former IAS officers on the think-tank,” Chief Secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad said. Before the committee was set up,Ubale’s name surfaced in the controversial Radia tapes, apparently in connection with a piece of land in Chennai believed to be owned by Tata Group companies.

Gaikwad denied that the move to drop Ubale from the government panel had anything to do with the CBI seeking clarifications from the former IAS officer in connection with the spectrum scam. “I was not aware of this development,” Gaikwad said. V K Jairath, another former IAS officer who quit the services to join the private sector, was also part of the government panel formed last month to deal with issues such as attracting investment, develop infrastructure, and eradicating malnutrition in the state. Despite several attempts,Ubale could not be reached for comments. During his stint with the state government,Ubale was involved in the planning and execution of several key infrastructure projects in Mumbai.

When he resigned in August 2008,Ubale was secretary, special projects, overseeing Mumbai’s makeover projects and suggesting measures for its transformation into a world-class city. Ubale was also on the state government’s Unified Mumbai Metropolitan Transport Authority but it was later reconstituted. In 2001,he was secretary to the chief minister.
