The much-delayed implementation of the revised system of calculating property tax was further delayed when all corporators, except those from the Shiv Sena, staged a walkout from the standing committee meeting on Wednesday where BMC officials were scheduled to make a detailed presentation on the same. The corporators were protesting against the absenteeism and late comings of committee chairman Rahul Shewale.
Congress corporator Asif Zakeria said since last week,Shewale has been coming late for the meetings and on Tuesday he did not turn up at all. The meeting was scheduled for 3 pm and we kept waiting for the chairman till 4 pm. Yesterday,he did not arrive at all and sent a message as late as 5.30 pm saying that he will not be able to come and hence the meeting will stand cancelled, he said.
Interestingly, even BJP corporators, allies of Sena in the BMC,also participated in the walkout. A BJP corporator said it was irresponsible on Shewale’s part to come late for meetings. On Tuesday,Shewale was with Uddhav Thackeray all day long. But he should have given a prior intimation about his unavailability, he said.
However,in the absence of all other corporators apart from Sena corporators, more than 30 proposals were cleared without any debate in less than an hour.
When asked about his absence,Shewale said he was apologetic about it but still felt it was wrong on part of corporators to quit the committee meeting in this fashion. Along with the message,I had also apologised to the members. There was a reason behind my absence yesterday and therefore it was in bad spirit on their part to walk out of the committee meeting today, when I was on time.
The system to switch to calculation of property tax based on capital value instead of current system of rate-able value (rental value) has been awaiting the standing committee nod for many months now.
Members wanted a detailed presentation of change in tax rates across different areas in the city.
