Cops yet to conclude if Oshiwara woman committed suicide

The Oshiwara police investigating the death of Asma Umba (46) — found dead in her flat on Sunday — have not yet been able to conclusively determine whether she had committed suicide or had been killed.

The Oshiwara police investigating the death of Asma Umba (46) — found dead in her flat on Sunday — have not yet been able to conclusively determine whether she had committed suicide or had been killed.

Although officers probing the case said they suspected Umba was killed by her younger son, they do not have sufficient proof to arrest him. Police said since they have not got evidence to confirm Amba’s death a murder, they are also investigating whether she committed suicide.

According to Dilip Rupwate, senior police inspector of Oshiwara police, the police have questioned all of Umba’s neighbours, including a doctor whose clinic is located below her flat. However, nobody saw anyone other than Umba’s sons enter the house before she was found dead, the police said.

Initially, when Umba’s 17-year-old son had informed police that his mother had committed suicide,a case of unnatural death was registered. However, when Umba’s medial reports revealed that the cut on her neck was deep, the police registered a case of murder. The police suspected the minor, since Umba was allegedly last seen alive before he had entered her residence.

The Oshiwara police had found a knife from the spot, which they believe might have been used to slit Umba’s neck. However, later, her finger-prints were found on them, police said.

“We have also learnt that Umba was being treated for depression since her step-sons moved out of the house. Not being able to part from her sons,it is possible that Umba might have killed herself,” an officer said.

On Sunday,Umba had only two visitors, her stepson Mubarak (18) and her 17-year-old son. When Mubarak left,Umba came to down to see him off. However, after her younger son went home,he came out shouting that his mother had committed suicide, police said.
