The Mumbai police authorities have suspended two police constables for being absent from work for over three months. The officials said the two constables, who were posted at Cuffe Parade and MRA Marg police station in Mumbai, went on leave without seeking prior permission from their respective seniors and as their behaviour was found to be unruly during an internal enquiry, an order to suspend them from the service was issued.

According to police officials, the two constables were identified as Maruti Govind Barate and Santosh Soma Viranak. Barate was posted at Cuffe Parade police station while Viranak worked with MRA Marg police officials.

“Barate stopped coming to work from 9 November 2023 without informing anyone and as he did not report to work till the end of January, an enquiry was initiated following which he was suspended from the force,” an officer said.

On the other hand, the officials said that Viranak did not report to work from 18 September 2023. He later informed his superiors he was sick and did not join till the end of January.

A preliminary inquiry was ordered during which it was learnt that he had a habit of going on leave without informing anyone and would then claim to be sick.

“As his behaviour was found to be unruly, action was taken against him and an order to suspend him was issued,” an officer said.

The authorities further added that a detailed enquiry will be conducted against the two policemen and a decision to dismiss them from the force will be taken.
