The Mumbai Police are on high alert to ensure that Independence Day celebrations in the city pass off peacefully. Police sources said as many as 17,000 personnel will be deployed throughout the city on Wednesday. All senior officers have been asked to ensure that law and order in their respective jurisdictions is upheld.

Senior police officers said they have asked for several platoons of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and the Riot Control Police (RCP). “We have asked all our personnel to be present. We’ve also asked for extra personnel to be deployed,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajnish Seth.

Seth said police pickets will be set up throughout the city and entry as well as exit points to the city will be monitored.

Combing operations have also been initiated and several persons have been served notices under Section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code asking them not to disrupt law and order.

Police sources said high alert had also been sounded for the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh scheduled later this week. “After the blasts in Pune and the violence at Azad Maidan,we do not want to take any chances,” said a senior police officer.
