Two persons were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly beating up a constable after he foiled their attempt to rob an autorickshaw in Bhandup west.

On Tuesday night, after dropping a senior police inspector at his Kashimira residence, constable driver Kailash Shafi Singh Patil (32) was on his way back when he noticed two men moving suspiciously near an autorickshaw.

Patil, who is attached to Kanjurmarg police station for the last 3 years, got off the jeep and approached the men. He noticed that the duo were trying to rob the vehicle. He interrupted and asked them to surrender, but the two tried to run. Though Patil had a baton, the robbers hit him on his hand and back before fleeing. Patil immediately sent a wireless message to the patrolling van and the police station.

Within minutes, the detection team rushed to the spot and nabbed the two robbers from a nearby area. Patil was rushed to the Anukul Hospital in Bhandup where he received stitches. The accused have been identified as Kumar Virendra Gaur (22),a resident of Kanjurmarg west and Raju alias Daniya Khandagle (21),a resident of Kanjurmarg east.

Police Inspector S Padwe said that the two arrested are petty thieves and have many cases of thefts and robberies registered against them. “We have arrested the two for assaulting a public servant under Sections 333 and 353 of the Indian Penal Code,” said Padwe.
