Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Manikrao Thakre have come under fire from seniors in the party for issues ranging from unsatisfactory enrollment in the recent membership drive to Chavans style of functioning, which they said had damaged his image.
The matter came up during a meeting in Delhi on Thursday attended by senior party leaders, including Oscar Fernandes and all Central ministers from Maharashtra, except Gurudas Kamat. The CM came under fire for vacillating on issues and damaging his image… like he could have shared the dais with Amitabh Bachchan at the Marathi literary meet in Pune instead of visiting the venue a day earlier and saying he was yet to decide whether he would visit again the next day, a senior Congress leader said.
Also,Rahulji (Gandhi) does not like uninvited people hanging around for him during his visits…When he visited Mumbais Ramabai Nagar,Chavan waited for him for hours. He should not have gone there unless called for. The result was that instead of Rahulji visiting a Dalit colony, the chief minister waiting for hours (for Rahul) doing nothing at Ramabai Nagar was shown on TV channels and made headlines in newspapers. Also, the issue of a minister picking up Rahuljis shoes was the talk of the day, said the leader.
He further said senior party leaders had expressed dissatisfaction over Chavans style of functioning and his sagging image, while Thakre was criticised for making tall claims on organisational matters but failing to enroll members in the recent membership drive. Against the expectation of one crore members, the state unit enrolled only about 24 lakh. Smaller states like Punjab and Haryana have done a good job, the Congress leader said, pointing out that Thakre has been given two weeks to perform.
Thakre was also reprimanded for organising hill-station tours for youth to reach out to young voters without following protocol. Usually, such things are handled by the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress (YC),which report to Rahulji, he said. But the MPCC went ahead with its plan… now a panel of two members each from NSUI and the YC is to decide the venue and select delegates.
Thakre, said,Because of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections,we could not match the pace of other states… And because of the Assembly polls we got only one month for the enrollment. He said the MPCC would utilise the next two weeks to revive the membership drive.
