‘Composed’ gangrape victim completes deposition

The court arranged for a loudspeaker as the victim spoke in a low voice and was not audible.

The 22-year-old photojournalist who was gangraped by five men inside Shakti Mills on August 22 was ‘composed’ as she completed her deposition in the sessions court Friday, said special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. The victim had wept and fainted in court while answering questions Thursday.

The prosecution continued with the examination in the first half of the day and defence lawyers cross-examined her post-lunch. The court arranged for a loudspeaker as the victim spoke in a low voice and was not audible. Though her mother accompanied her to the court, she stayed in another room, adjacent to the courtroom, during the in-camera proceedings.

The woman had on Thursday identified all four accused —Vijay Jadhav (18),Siraj Khan (24),Mohammad Kasim Shaikh (20),Mohammad Salim Ansari (27). The fifth is a juvenile and is being tried before the Juvenile Justice Board. The court has concluded recording statements of six witnesses.

The next hearing of the case is scheduled for October 21,when the prosecution is expected to start the trial in another gangrape case of July 31 when a 18-year old telephone operator was allegedly raped by five persons.

Three men — Jadhav,Shaikh and Ansari — along with Ashfaque Shaikh (25) and a juvenile are facing gangrape charges along with other relevant IPC sections for conspiracy, criminal intimidation and illegal confinement.
