The second leg of Samarpan,a concert series in memory of Pandit Dinkar Kaikini,will take place today

Conceptualised as a homage to Pandit Dinkar Kaikini,Samarpan,a concert series,was conceived by the late Hindustani musicians youngest disciple,Nitin Sampat,soon after the formers death in 2010. I wanted that his contribution to all kinds of music folk,classical,bandishes and so on be known to as many people as possible, says Sampat.

Consequently,the performances that will be part of Samarpan include bhajans,khayals,and inspirational and folk songs. The first concert in the series was held in July 2010 and the second part will be held on Friday evening at Ravindra Natya Mandir,Prabhadevi.

Some of Kaikinis compositions were designed to be sung by a choir,so a majority of the concert will be performed by a group of about 25 adults and children. Very few people know that he composed choir music,so the idea is to introduce people to these compositions, says the 31-year-old. The evening will consist of 10 compositions,of which seven will be sung by adults in the choir and the other three by children. The compositions that will be performed by the children,Sampat says,were composed keeping their age in mind. They are simple so the children can enjoy the words they are singing,while still retaining the choir format, he says. In addition to these,Sampat will perform another three compositions,all of which also,he says,are relatively unknown.
