The process of online admission to junior colleges ran into opening jitters on Friday as the website,http://fyjc.org.in/mumbai,had to be closed for nearly an hour, shortly after the filing of applications had begun.
The website, created by the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd (MKCL),worked from 10 to 11 30 am but slowed down as more and more students logged in simultaneously. Soon, students were greeted with the homepage message,Site Under Maintenance. Please Bear With Us. Inconvenience Caused is Deeply Regretted. Site Will be Available at 4 pm.
Dr Aatul Wadegaonkar, general manager,e-governance,said MKCL later added servers to speed up the site. We had not expected problems with two servers. But when we saw the website had slowed due to the traffic,we decided to add three more servers and had to shut the portal for some 45 minutes. Performance improved with five servers.
Till 1 pm,16,000 students had completed registration and filling forms; by 6 30 pm,the number was up to 38,000; by night,Wadegaonkar predicted, nearly 25 per cent of the regions students (2,63,307) are likely to have completed the process.
By tonight, the figure of students completing registration could go up to 50,000. This problem is not likely to arise again as students will be able to fill up online forms and submit at submission centres for six more days. It was the first day and many students logged in at the same time. Now the traffic will be distributed and the website will be working 24×7, he said.
College principals said the process was also slowed by the need to fill preferences among colleges, streams and courses. Suhas Pednekar, principal,Ramnarain Ruia College,Matunga, said,Students should fill up a dummy form, which they got along with their results,at home first. Then they should log on and rewrite the same details. That will save time.
Many students forgot to look up the codes for colleges before going online. They took time searching for the right codes. Each student ended up taking over 40 minutes overall, said Parag Alvani,BJP leader, who was at an online centre set up by the party at Vile Parle.
Rati Sethi of Canossa High School,Andheri, said,The website was slow and I could not log in earlier. But I completed registration by evening. I still have to complete filling up the form. I will do that at school tomorrow.
