The Mumbai Police have arrested three persons involved in killing jewellery shop owner Pankaj Soni in his Chembur store and stealing goods worth about Rs 20 lakh last month.

Three arrested for murder of Chembur jeweller

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have arrested three persons involved in killing jewellery shop owner Pankaj Soni in his Chembur store and stealing goods worth about Rs 20 lakh last month. The accused have been identified as Sandeep Mali (30),Anand Sarode (30) and Gautam Mali (23). Another person involved in the case is yet to be tracked. The police have recovered cash amounting to Rs 3.4 lakh,50 gram of jewellery and a mobile phone. According to the police,Sandeep along with an accomplice entered Soni’s jewellery shop,Narmada Jewellers in Chembur,on the pretext of asking for water on May 20. The duo then killed Soni and fled with the ornaments. The accused then tried to sell the stolen goods to jewellery shops in Nallasopara and Satara areas.

Mill workers demand housing,employment

Mumbai: The Girni Kamgar Sangharsh Samiti staged a protest at Azad Maidan on Wednesday demanding government housing facilities for the workers and their legal heirs. The three-hour protest was attended by about 2,000 people,including some from outside Mumbai and the state. The agitation was withdrawn after a meeting in the Mantralaya. The protesters also demanded that the government ensure that at least one child of textile mill workers gets employment in the city. Datta Iswalkar,president of the union,said,“It is not just government jobs that we are demanding. So many jobs are created in malls and other new office establishments. If the government wants it can create a proper mechanism to ensure that our youths get the jobs.”
