Vengsarkar XI well on top

Dilip Vengsarkar XI finished the second day holding all the aces up their sleeve, and just six wickets away from a comprehensive innings win against Sunil Gavaskar XI in the three-day U-22 Cricket Tournament for the Madhav Mantri Trophy at Cross Maidan on Tuesday. Starting the day on 289 for 4,Vengsarkar XI stretched their first innings total to a massive 371 with Kaustubh Pawar adding seven runs to his overnight score of 141. Kaustubh Kolamkar too joined in the run-fest,helping himself to a half-century before his team were finally bowled out. Left-arm spinner Jay Nayak was the only Gavaskar XI bowler to shine, finishing with figures of 4/109,with Akshay Ghorpade playing his part with three scalps of his own.

That was the beginning of a disappointing day for Gavaskar XI as they were first bowled out for a mere 167 in their first innings, lasting a mere 37.3 overs, before being reduced to 50/4 second time around. It took pacer Javed Khan’s cameo towards the end,an aggressive 61 that included eight sixes and two fours, for Gavaskar XI to even avoid a major embarrassment and cross the 150-run mark. Brief Scores: Dilip Vengsarkar XI 371 in 84.5 overs (Kaustubh Pawar 148,Siddesh Lad 61,Sanket Jadhav 41,Kaustubh Kolamkar 50; Jay Nayak 4/109,A Ghorpade 3/71) vs Sunil Gavaskar 167 in 37.3 overs (Javed Khan 61; Pratik Dabholkar 3/15,Amit Rao 3/52) and 50 for 4 in 19 overs; Sachin Tendulkar XI 131 in 36 overs and 96 for 3 in 27 overs (Shalabh Agarwal 47 n.o.,Suryakumar Yadav 40) vs Ravi Shastri XI 196 in 73.4 overs (Jaideep Pardeshi 57,Gandhar Bhatawdekar 36,Badre Alam 5/43).
