To understand the depth of Mumbai’s water crisis, here is the math: Mumbai’s regular demand for water is 4250 mld (million litres a day) and the available supply, before the current water cut imposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, was 3450 mld. After the imposition of a punishing 15 per cent cut, existing water supply is 2900 mld. The Middle Vaitarna Water Supply project, when completed in March 2012,will supply an additional 455 mld, which means the growing demand-supply gap will not be closed in the coming years.

From making it mandatory for large constructions to adopt eco-friendly measures like rainwater harvesting from April 1,2010,to studying the possibility of providing recycled water for non-potable uses, the BMC is examining various measures to plug the holes.
