CITY GIRL

If Ranbir Kapoor is the cute heartthrob,Konkona Sen Sharma is the serious,“thinking man’s” actress. Go by the general perceptions of these actors and you will agree that director Ayan Mukherjee could not have brought together a more unlikely pair for his debut film Wake up Sid.

The 29-year-old National Award winner, who plays an ambitious writer Ayesha in the film, feels that love is plausible even when there’s hardly anything in common between the two people involved. “I don’t know if it works for the entire population but there must be something in the saying ‘Opposites attract’,” she smiles, adding,“I have friends with whom I share little in common but we get along and there’s always something to learn from them.”

Despite being poles apart,Sid is Ayesha’s first friend in the city. “Ayesha has just moved to Mumbai and doesn’t know anyone here. The two become friends and Ayesha’s personality has a great effect on Sid,who begins to take things seriously,” she says, explaining her character.

And Sid’s effect rubs off on Ayesha too. “Of course,Ayesha finally begins to relax and take things a tad easy. But the best part about Ayesha having met Sid is that he helps her discover the city,” she says. Through the character, says the Bengali actress who was born and raised in Kolkata, she also got a chance to discover Mumbai. “I moved to Mumbai a few years ago because this is where the film industry is. But I hardly get a chance to explore the city.”

Familiar with the malls and the eateries in the filmy neighbourhood where she currently resides, the Bengali actress had never had a chance to visit the famous landmarks. “The only place I have visited a couple of times is the famous Chor Bazaar where I have made shopping trips for my home all alone. Shooting for this film gave me the opportunity to visit places like The Asiatic Library and walk around Fort and the picturesque streets of Ballard Estate,” she reveals.

Sen Sharma might be less than a decade old in the industry, but she has already created a place for herself, admired by her co-stars for her effortless performances. Time and again, she has since given critically acclaimed and award-winning performances in a variety of movies across genres, including 15 Park Avenue,Omkara,Page 3,Mixed Doubles and more recently,a very commercial Luck by Chance.

“The fact is that glamour does not interest me,she says. “I don’t think glamour can aid anyone’s performance or help me emote better.”
