Rules of engagement
For the single brigade of the city,Sunday was a day of mourning indeed when another bit the matrimonial dust. A private ceremony at the Malik farmhouse in Karjat saw actor Imran Khan getting engaged to longtime sweetheart Avantika Malik. While Khan looked good enough to eat in a bandgala sherwani designed by Karan Johar and Varun Bahl,we did wish Malik could wear a dress that didn’t look like it had been culled from her mother’s velvet curtains. Rallying behind the young actor was the full force of the Khan household, including uncle Aamir Khan with wives from the past and the present (Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao),grand uncle Mansoor Khan, and Aamir’s parents Tahir Hussain and Zeenat. Other B-towners digging into the savory Mughlai cuisine included Johar,Kunal Kohli,Purab Kohli,Kunal Kapoor and Abhay Deol.

Showstopper As an engagement gift,Khan presented Malik with a specially-imported Volkswagon Beetle. Now,if that isn’t love, what is?

Equestrian Equations
Everybody knows that the races are hardly about racing. Who cares about horses and mud tracks when you can dress up in your mink and chinchilla fur coat, dig your fangs into sumptuous four-course meals and most importantly, get a close-up view of Salman Khan (who rode a thoroughbred called ‘Wild Rose’) in rodeo mode. Sunday’s Hello Million Race and Veer Race at Mahalaxmi Racecourse was a smorgasbord of leisure, glamour and entertainment. Topping the celebrity hit list was the father-son duo,David and Jeremy Morris of David Morris Jewellers of Bond Street London. Sherlyn Chopra,Shriya Kishore,Simran Kaur and Parvati Omanakuttan were some of the fashionistas showcasing their baubles. The best dressed man and woman award of the evening went to Adar Poonawala and Ekta Raheja. And of course,no race can be complete without the city’s swish set,Shobha De,Jacqueline Fernandes,Shenaz Treasurywala,Aarti Surendranath,Farah and Riyadh Oomerbhoy,Janine Jeejeebhoy,Neeta Lulla,Nisha Javeri,Ekta Raheja and chairman of RWITC Vivek Jain.

Bummer We wish Natasha Poonawala would have chosen a less sombre outfit than the strapless Oscar de la Renta that she sported—a dress,we felt, that was totally unsuited to the occasion. Or any occasion,in fact.
