Changing City: Rs 950 crore Station improvement project across the city on course, to be completed by 2026

The initiative seeks to create additional space through platform expansions, elevated decks, and foot-over bridges at 18 key stations in the Mumbai suburban railway network.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is steadily advancing its ambitious station improvement plan across the suburban railway network of Central and Western Railways. With several station upgrades already completed and others progressing in phases, the project aims to be fully realised by 2026. Encompassing 18 key stations, including Khar, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Kandivali, and Nallasopara, the initiative seeks to streamline passenger movement by creating additional space through platform expansions, elevated decks, and foot-over bridges, which are otherwise long burdened by overcrowding and inadequate facilities.

Target Year: 2026
Total Cost: Rs 949.89 crore

Scope of Work

Expansion: Over 60,000 sq. meters of additional passenger space.
Upgrades: Elevated decks, platform expansions, new foot-over bridges (FOBs), skywalks, lifts, elevators, toilet blocks, and facade beautification.

Stations Under Development

The improvement plan covers 18 key stations:

Central Line: Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund, Dombivli, Neral, Kasara, GTB Nagar, Chembur, Govandi, Mankhurd (Rs 630.75 crore)
Western Line: Khar, Kandivali, Nallasopara, Vasai Road, Mira Road, Santacruz, Bhayander (Rs 319.14 crore)

Progress So Far

1. Khar Station: All work completed including deck, FOB, installation of elevators, and escalators.

2. Kandivali Station:

-263m x 10.4m deck (connecting South FOB to North FOB) completed.

-4m-wide skywalk connecting FOBs on platforms 2/3 and 4 completed.

-The remaining work is underway and will be ready by 2025.

3. Ghatkopar Station:

-Phase 1 completed.

-Phase 2 recently commenced.

4. Other Stations: Improvement work ongoing.
