The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to launch the second girder of the under-construction Carnac Bridge in South Mumbai between January 18 and 19 to open the bridge by August this year.
BMC officials said they have approached the Central Railway to impose a railway block on the intervening night of January 18 and 19 to launch the girder. The first girder was launched in October last year.
“At present, the asphalting work is underway on the first girder to create the carriageway. After the second girder is launched, completion of ancillary works like painting traffic signages, and levelling work of the two roads will take a few more months,” a senior official told The Indian Express.
“Instead of partially reopening the bridge, we are focusing on opening it entirely for the people since it will be more convenient for motorists as well as pedestrians,” the officer added.
The new Carnac Bridge is being rebuilt after civic authorities pulled down the 154-year-old structure in 2022. The old bridge was demolished as a structural audit found that several portions were corroded.
The new bridge which is being built at Rs 55 crore will be 70 metre long, with the girders weighing around 550 metric tonnes each. Located between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid railway stations in South Mumbai, the bridge connected P D’Mello Road with Masjid easing vehicular congestion.
Since the bridge passes above railway tracks as well as the city area, the process of launching the girder is being taken up jointly by BMC and the Central Railway (CR).
