In just 24 days since it was held, the Mumbai University on Monday night declared the results of the Bachelor of Commerce (B Com) Semester VI examination.

While the Mumbai University usually faces criticism for long delays, the time taken to publish the results is way within the stipulated 45 days.

Pass percentage and other figures

According to the information shared by the Mumbai University, a total of 54,901 students had registered for the exam of the graduating batch of the commerce stream.

However, 52,478 students appeared for the exams out of which 16,636 passed, recording a pass percentage of 43.53 per cent. As many as 21,592 students have failed and 2,423 were absent.

Meanwhile, the results of a considerable number of students have been reserved by the university due to different issues. This includes the result of 8,688 students who have not passed the first or second year of the three-year degree-course. Unless a student has cleared all previous exams, the final graduation result is withheld. Results of an additional 95 students have been withheld due to copying issues.

Measures taken to ensure faster publication of results

The university has attributed the fast turn around time to a slew of measures to speed up the process.

The steps include special meetings with professors and principals of various colleges to ensure a speedy evaluation process. This led to continuation of evaluation work by professors even during the summer vacation.

Considering that a large number of students appeared for this exam, the principals were directed to ensure an adequate number of professors are contributing to evaluation of papers. Along with the process of assessment, even administrative staff at the examination section ensured there was no hiccup in publishing the results.

Reason behind the speedy publication of results

Even as the result shows average performance by students, timely declaration has become a reason of joy for the students. Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University Dr Ravindra Kulkarni said, “The B Com Semester 6 result is very important for the future of the students. Since many students go abroad for higher education, special attention was given to this examination, the assessment and (publication of) the results.”

All answer sheets have been evaluated and moderated by the Onscreen Marking (OSM) method. “Since the number of students is more than 50,000, the files were uploaded on the website according to the seat numbers so that it is easy for the students to check the results on the website. The capacity of the server has also been increased for this,” said a university official, adding that the university ensures special attention for timely declaration of results for the outgoing batch of graduating students.

Mumbai University has always been criticised for delayed results causing issues to students, especially the graduating batches, such as delays in pursuing higher-education or difficulty in getting jobs in absence of a degree.

Noting that the future of students is directly linked to the declaration of the results, Governor of Maharashtra Ramesh Bais in his capacity of the Chancellor to all the state universities had reprimanded the authorities last year. He had cautioned that vice-chancellors (VCs) of the respective universities will be held accountable for the delay in declaration of results and dispensation of marksheets.
