The CA's 65-year-old mother, in her complaint, said the two visited their home and used threats to extort money. The Vakola police in Mumbai arrested a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman for allegedly extorting over Rs 2.47 crore from a 32-year-old chartered accountant (CA), eventually driving him to suicide.
The deceased, who had been working as a CA for eight years, lost his father when he was just six-months-old and was undergoing treatment for cancer since the Covid-19 pandemic induced lockdown. He was found dead at his Santacruz (East) home on Saturday, with police recovering suicide notes detailing the sustained threats and financial coercion he faced.
According to police, the accused—Rahul Parwani and Saba Qureshi—allegedly befriended the CA via Instagram last year. They subsequently began blackmailing him using personal material, and repeatedly threatened to publicly disclose sensitive information.
The CA’s 65-year-old mother, in her complaint, said the two visited their home and used threats to extort money, forcing her son to first exhaust his own savings, then mortgage her gold, and eventually withdraw funds from his employer’s accounts under duress.
When the pressure and threats did not stop and fearing further humiliation, the victim is believed to have consumed poison, said police.
Parwani allegedly extorted Rs 2.44 crore while Qureshi received Rs 2.6 lakh. The two accused have been booked under Sections 308(2), 108, 308(3), 3(5) of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and would be produced in the court on Wednesday, said a police officer.
