Braving the rain Friday afternoon, the Jadhav family waited near the boundary wall of the collapsed structure waiting to know the fate of their eldest sibling and his family members.

Chandrakant Jadhav,49,employed with the BMC’s market department, moved in the building with his wife and three children seven years ago. “This building had been served a notice,” said Vijay,Chandrakant’s younger brother, who is also employed with BMC.

Chandrakant’s wife Chitra,41,and their children – Sanket,24,Pallavi,20,and Manasi,18,are feared trapped in the debris of the building. In the morning,Chandrakant’s relatives were told that Sanket was rescued from the debris. However, they could not trace his name on the list of injured. “Fire brigade officials told us that he had been rescued. But we couldn’t find his name on the list of injured. Neither did we find him at J J Hospital or Nair Hospital,” Vijay said.

The family members now have no option but to wait. While Chandrakant’s cellphone is unavailable, calls to Sanket’s cellphone are going unanswered. “We do not know their fate yet as our attempts to contact them have been futile. Chandrakant’s mobile phone is unavailable. And calls to Sanket’s cellphone are going unanswered,” said an anxious Pradeep,Chandrakant’s other brother.

Vijay added that it is unfortunate that the civic administration did nothing to renovate a building in which its employee was housed with his family members. “Politicians visiting the site today have nothing to offer apart from words,” Vijay said.
