Four candidates filed their nominations for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday.

Nominations filed for Mayoral polls
Mumbai: Four candidates filed their nominations for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday. For the post of Mayor,the Shiv Sena fielded three-term corporator from Parel Shraddha Jadhav against Congress nominee Presila Kadam,corporator from Wadala East.  The NCP’s Vidya Chavan (Vile Parle East) is pitched against the BJP’s Shailaja Girkar (Kandivali) for the post of Deputy Mayor. The posts have been reserved for women from the open category. The elections will be held on December 1.

Trees from Gujarat to make city greener
Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will buy 100 trees from nurseries in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore to make the city greener within a short period of time. The trees,measuring five-six ft in height,will be replanted along the arterial and main roads,dividers and other open spaces in the city. Civic officials said the replanting process has to be completed within 15 days of buying the trees.

Expedite trials: High Court directive to magistrates
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Friday directed magistrates to expedite the trial of undertrials languishing in jails across the state. The court has asked the magistrates to expedite trial of 554 undertrials who have been in prison for over three years and less than five years. The state informed the court that there are 11,940 undertrials who have been in jail for less than three years.

HC seeks reply on I-card to police informant
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has asked the Commissioner of Police to explain how an official card came to be issued to a police informant. In response to a petition filed by one Vikas Ganeriwal,complaining that the informant was using the card to bully people and to settle personal disputes,the court sought a reply from Police Commissioner D Sivanandan within two weeks.
