There is life in the old fashion week yet. Lakme Fashion Week,Mumbai, which is the countrys oldest such event, may be in its eleventh year, but it continues to keep things fresh. Not least among the tricks up its stylish sleeve,is LFW inviting international fashion figures to bring in global appeal. March 9 will see renowned designer Christopher Kanes much-lauded Summer Resort 2010 collection being paraded on the runway of the LFW,alongside some truly breathtaking hairstyling by leading fashion hair care company,TIGI,and its top stylist,Anthony Mascolo.
Last Marchs Spring/Summer show had seen a packed house during the fundraiser Mai Mumbai show. It saw supermodel Naomi Campbell strut her stuff on the ramp, along with a roster of Indian celebrities like Deepika Padukone,Feroze Gujral,Mehr and Arjun Rampal and Malaika Arora Khan, wearing creations from Indian and international designers like Rohit Bal,Sabyasachi Mukherjee,Dolce and Gabbana,Roberto Cavalli and Versace.
Weve always known that just owning a closet full of haute couture is not enough; one needs the right styling, including hair. Anil Chopra,Advisor,Lakme, believes that this show format, which is exclusive to the LFW,will formally unite the world of fashion and hair. He says,Mascolo and the TIGI International Creative team will create hair looks that perfectly reflect Kanes collection and complement his creative vision. But why have an international designer show at an event that is meant to promote Indian fashion? Chopra explains,LFW has always had a vision of integrating India into the global fashion world. We have helped in the participation of our designers at leading fashion weeks around the world. It is now an opportune time for a leading international designer to participate at LFW.
Given that TIGI and Lakme could be considered rivals as theyre both in the business of beauty, some may look upon this inclusion of an international brand as a publicity gimmick. But Chopra assures us that is not so. LFW has invested over 11 years to the betterment of the overall fashion industry. While we continue to encourage fresh talent to innovate their expertise on the Indian ramp,we are also opening newer avenues for the growth of business of fashion. Well wait and watch.
