Andheri police recovered a box containing 22 rounds of live ammunition from a local train here late Thursday night. An investigation has been initiated in this case.
According to the Andheri railway police, the box, wrapped in a khaki-coloured cloth, was kept under a seat in the general compartment. From Churchgate, the train had reached Andheri at around 7.40 pm. While cleaning the train,Raju Kanojja found the box. He informed his senior about it who then contacted the Andheri railway police. A team that was sent to the spot, opened the box.
The box contained 22 rounds of .38 caliber live ammunition, used in revolvers. Mostly, police agencies use .38 caliber revolvers, and we are conducting inquiries to find out if the ammunition was assigned to the city police, the railway police, the Railway Protection Force or any other such police agency. The rounds have the code KH-98 engraved on them. No complaint has been registered so far, said senior police Inspector Shivaji Shinde,Andheri railway police.
CCTV footage at Andheri railway station is being examined to check if any police personnel got off the train.
An officer with the Andheri railway police said it was possible that someone had forgotten the ammunition while getting off the train. However, the possibility of the ammunition being stolen also cannot be ruled out. We will kno once we know who the ammunition was assigned to, said the officer.
