In the run up to state Assembly elections, nearly 10,111 polling stations have been earmarked in Mumbai district. Marking an increase of 218 polling stations from the Lok Sabha elections conducted in May this year, each polling station in the district (Mumbai city and suburbs) is slated to have an average of 1,200 voters, the BMC said on Friday.
In light of directives from Election Commission of India and State Election Commission, officials said polling stations have been finalised in Mumbai’s suburbs and city division to improve efficiency.
As per officials, the total polling stations for upcoming state legislative assembly polls have been increased to 2,537 in Mumbai city division while 7,574 stations in suburbs.
This marks an increase of 218 stations from LS elections in Mumbai in the fifth and the final phase in May, when 2,509 polling stations were set up in Mumbai city, and 7,384 in suburbs.
In what will enhance efficiency and pace of the voting process, adding to the number of polling stations will reduce the average number of voters per booth from 1,500 (during LS polls) to an average of 1,200 voters in upcoming polls.
For the upcoming elections, BMC commissioner and state appointed administrator Bhushan Gagrani has been appointed district election officer.
Meanwhile, to inform voters about changes in the location of their polling stations, BMC has launched the ‘Know your polling station’ awareness drive, wherein staffers will visit homes of voters to inform them about the changes. Registered voters will also be provided information through the media.
