Boost for Vidarbha’s health service: Maharashtra Govt directs expediting pending medical projects in Nagpur and Amravati  

Discussions also covered increasing the student admission capacity at Nagpur’s Government Ayurveda College from 100 to 200.

Upgrades are planned for medical colleges and hospitals in Nagpur, Amravati and Chandrapur to improve capacity and services.The Maharashtra government has ordered faster implementation of healthcare and medical education projects in Vidarbha.

The Maharashtra government has decided to strengthen public medical colleges and hospitals in Vidarbha. State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has issued directions to resolve pending works and proposals related to medical education and health departments in Nagpur and Amravati districts.

At a meeting held Saturday and attended by Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, district collectors of Nagpur and Amravati, municipal commissioners, as well as senior officials from the Medical Education Department, Bawankule called for expediting proposals related to the health sector in the region.

Key discussions

* Government Medical College, Nagpur: Adding one floor in the TB Ward of the Government Medical College, constructing a sickle cell and thalassemia hospital, and accelerating the construction of new residential accommodations for doctors and other health workers.

* Nagpur Super Speciality Hospital: Modernising the Intensive Care Units and Operating Theatres in ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ wings of the Super Speciality Hospital.

* Mayo Hospital: Discussions were held on the required manpower and outsourcing to increase capacity to 1,360 beds, sanctioning posts from Class 1 to Class 4 as per the directions of the Nagpur Bench of the Mumbai High Court, and filling 526 vacant posts for sanitation workers.

* Government Medical College, Amravati: Directions were given to provide administrative approval and funds for the purchase of necessary equipment for the second-year MBBS course in the 2025-26 academic year.

* Government Ayurveda College, Nagpur: Discussions also covered increasing the student admission capacity at Nagpur’s Government Ayurveda College from 100 to 200, starting postgraduate courses in four new subjects, constructing new buildings, and creating 214 new posts.

* Government Medical College, Chandrapur: Additionally, the meeting emphasised employing local unemployed youth on a contract basis at the Government Medical College in Chandrapur.
