The bodies of three boys who were feared to have drowned near Marve Creek in Mumbai’s Malad were recovered on Monday morning, police said. They were among a group of five that ventured into the deep water to swim and reported missing on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Nikhil Sajid Kayampur, 13; Subham Rajkumar Jaiswal, 12; and Ajay Jitendra Harijan, 12. Their friends Krishna Jitendra Harijan, 16, and Ankush Bharat Shivare, 13, were rescued by local fishermen. All are residents of Pareirawadi, Marve.

“The search operation carried out by the Navy, local fishermen, fire brigade and the Mumbai Police concluded after the three bodies were recovered between 7.30 am and 10.30 am. They have been sent to Shatabdi Hospital for post-mortem. We are registering accidental death reports,” said Chimaji Adhav, senior inspector of the Malwani police station.

Though the place already has warning boards, the police would send a proposal to the Coast Guard to closely cover the area in its regular patrol, Adhav added.

“When we asked the two rescued children, who were still very frightened by the accident, they told us that they went to the creek to clean their feet. But the local onlookers informed us that they saw them swimming before they started shouting for help,” an officer from the fire department said on Sunday.

“Although the creek is small, it is full of water and has become deeper during the monsoon. So, people, especially children who are not trained in swimming, are advised to avoid swimming in such creeks as they often fail to gauge the rise in the water depth in the monsoon,” the officer had said.

On Saturday, three youngsters drowned in the Chinchoti waterfall in Vasai, which turns into a popular trekking trail during the monsoon.
