BMC commences scrutiny of 2,516 nominations filed; BJP candidates in wards 211 and 212 fail to submit papers

In a major upset for BJP, its candidates from ward number 211 and 212 -- Shakil Ansari and Mandakini Khamkar respectively -- did not submit their nominations papers with the returning officer.

The scrutiny process is slated to continue until January 2, following which the BMC will release the final list of contesting candidates.

With the process of filing nominations for the upcoming civic polls coming to a close on Wednesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that 2,516 nomination papers were filed by candidates vying to contest for 227 electoral wards across the city. On Wednesday, the civic body commenced the process for scrutiny of applications.

In a major upset for BJP, its candidates from ward number 211 and 212 — Shakil Ansari and Mandakini Khamkar respectively — did not submit their nominations papers with the returning officer. Confirming the development, an official privy to the nomination processes said, “In Prabhags number 211 and 212, we did not receive any applications of candidates from the BJP.”

Data furnished by the BMC showed that between December 23 and 30 when the nomination filings concluded, 2,516 nominations were submitted by candidates against 11,391 forms distributed by the officials during the same period. Records showed that the highest number of applications were filed in M/East ward (Deonar) where 182 forms were filed, followed by 133 papers submitted in K/West ward which encompasses Andheri, Lokhandwala among other pockets.

As the civic body commenced its scrutiny on Wednesday, several hopeful candidates found their forms cancelled over lacunae in filing processes. In the high-profile ward 226 of Colaba, forms of Congress and AAP candidates failed to meet the prerequisites, leaving the BJP candidate Makarand Narwekar in a fight against independent party candidates.

The scrutiny process is slated to continue until January 2, following which the BMC will release the final list of contesting candidates.
