Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged BJP workers to gear up for the coming BMC elections this year to make sure the party wins the civic body polls, as he accused the Shiv Sena (UBT) of ignoring the city and its residents.

While addressing various BJP cells at a meeting held late Wednesday, Fadnavis said, “The BMC has been under the Shiv Sena lead by Uddhav Thackeray for three decades, but they have failed Mumbai and Mumbaikars. The BJP should and will win the BMC polls. It is not for power but to give justice to Mumbai and Mumbaikars.”

“With a dedicated Mumbai team, we will win the BMC polls. The elections will be at anytime as per the court decision. But whether it takes place in September, October or November, we have to be battle ready.”

As Fadnavis emphasised the BJP wants to ensure that Mumbaikars get the best facilities they deserve, he pointed out the bad roads in the city. “For Thackeray, the BMC has become a potential source to retain power and draw resources. But in their selfish pursuit, Mumbaikars have had to pay a heavy price. Despite an expenditure of Rs 2000 crore on roads every year, people have to ride through potholes. Whereas, within a month of taking charge the Eknath Shinde-led government has taken a decision to concretise all roads… For the next 40 years, we will have pothole-free roads,” he added.

The deputy chief minister also accused the MVA of stalling the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, which he said was launched during his tenure. “After our government came to power (June 2022 ), we started the process. The work should start within three to four months. The Dharavi project will change the face of the entire area and Mumbai,” he added.

Fadnavis also urged BJP workers not to harbour any ambiguity about the Shinde government. “After the Supreme Court verdict, everything is clear. Even the apex court verdict said that the Shinde government is constitutional and legal. And that the governor was right in asking BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde) to form the government. Despite the court verdict, they (Thackeray Sena) are behaving as if they have won. Let them beat the drums.”
