BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhya on Monday said that the political party “does not approve of any misconduct against the media”, over a controversy sparked by state president Chandrasekhar Bawankule at an event in Dombivli on Sunday morning.

“The BJP does not approve of any misconduct against mediapersons. It is not part of the party’s culture… If the media is hurt, we will apologise,” said Upadhya.

Bawankule was in Kalyan Dombivali on Sunday as part of ‘Sampark Se Samarthan’ campaign, during which, a Maratha satirist “walked on the stage” and raised slogan ‘Ek Maratha, Lakh Maratha’ in support of the demand for reservation for the Maratha community. Bawankule spoke to the Maratha activist, while warning him not to raise such slogans at a party event.

When the mediapersons covering the event sought the activists’ reaction, several local BJP workers “forcibly” took the activist away from the spot, stopping the mediapersons from interacting with the activist. This had led to a clash between the two sides, said sources.
