Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has approved the redevelopment of 250 cessed and dilapidated buildings in the island city of Mumbai through an urban renewal scheme.

The Saifee Burhani Trust will be conducting the redevelopment of these buildings in Bhendi Bazaar. The buildings are spread over 39,585 sq m in South Mumbai and nine reservations.

As many as 4,237 tenants will get a minimum of 300-sq ft houses. The developers will have to set up a corpus fund for 10 years so that the tenants do not have to bear the cost of maintenance after the construction is completed. The developer will have to pay Rs 5,000 per sq m as development tax to the municipal corporation to develop basic infrastructure in the locality.
