BARC scientist’s car runs over peer

The police registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving against Dr Noel Jacob.

The police Friday booked a scientist with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) after he allegedly ran over another scientist with the research facility on Thursday night, costing the latter his life.

The police said the accused, Dr Noel Jacob, was driving his Honda City car on the main road outside the BARC residential complex on Thursday night, while the deceased, Dr P M Pathak, was exiting the complex on his motorbike when the accident took place.

“There was a head-on collision and Pathak sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the MGM Hospital in Navi Mumbai, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday,” said senior police inspector Vijay Kadam of Trombay police station.

The police registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving against Jacob under the Indian Penal Code. “Jacob was not drunk at the time of the incident. He has been booked, but we have not arrested him. Instead, we have issued him a notice under Section 41 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in keeping with a recent Supreme Court directive, according to which arrest is not necessary in an offense that attracts a punishment of less than seven years,” Kadam added.

Both Pathak and Jacob were senior scientists with the BARC and used to stay in the residential quarters with their families, the police said. mumbai.newsline@expressindia.com
