On Saturday morning, citizens woke up to a nip in the air as Mumbai recorded its lowest temperature of the season with the minimum temperature dipping to 17.5 degrees Celsius. According to IMD scientists, the city is slated to experience an increase in minimum temperatures, owing to the development of a trough.

As Santacruz observatory registered 17.5 degrees on Saturday morning, the IMD’s coastal recording station recorded 20 degrees. Mercury levels dropped during the day time too with the Colaba station recording a maximum temperature of 28.6 degrees, two degrees below normal.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai said, “We have recorded the lowest temperature on Saturday. However, there is a trough developing because of which the temperatures will rise. In Mumbai, from Sunday, minimum temperatures will range between 18 – 20 degrees. Besides this, the trough is also slated to bring rains in some parts of Maharashtra.”

Regarding cool temperatures that the city is currently experiencing, Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD Mumbai said, “There is a component of some northerly as well as north easterly winds in the air. Owing to this, the city is experiencing a drop in temperatures. However, the temperatures are unlikely to drop further any time soon.”

Besides the drop in temperatures, the city’s skyline also witnessed a blanket of haze during the early hours owing to the drop in Air Quality Index (AQI) levels, a result of declining daily temperatures.

Falling in the moderate category, data furnished by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that the overall AQI touched 134 in Mumbai on Saturday, with the worst air quality registered in BKC (211) and Bandra East’s Kherwadi (208). Meanwhile, the best AQI has been observed in Byculla (97). Of the city’s 23 stations, only one pocket registered an AQI in double digits.
