Even as Gahalon was remanded in police custody till May 17 Friday, the Rathi family expressed doubt over his guilt. “Preeti never had problems with any boy. We don’t know how Gahalon is involved,” said her uncle Vinodkumar Singh.

He said with bandages limiting her sight, she could not confirm if Gahalon was her attacker.

Doctors at Masina Hospital said her health had steadily improved and she was now able to breathe without the help of a ventilator, though she was still in ICU.

National Commission for Women member Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar said she met defence minister AK Antony and would soon get a response on her application concerning admission of Preeti to AMC. “I will also meet the chief minister soon to discuss the matter.”
