While residents had begun rejoicing over arrest of the alleged serial killer wanted for the murder of two toddlers in Cuffe Parade area,DNA test results from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina said the man arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap a toddler in the vicinity is not the wanted murderer.

The police have been on the lookout for the suspect wanted in connection with the murders of Karishma Chavan and Jagruti Patel, both around three-years-old. Karishma and Jagruti were found murdered in a secluded spot, near the Nariman Point Fire Brigade Depot.

While Colaba resident Karishma was found dead on January 18,Cuffe Parade resident Jagruti was found murdered on November 13 last year.

The suspect,Mohan Yadav (32),was arrested by the Cuffe Parade police under Section 363 (kidnapping) of the IPC on March 15. Yadav was arrested after residents of the Shiv Shakti chawl in Cuffe Parade nabbed him when he was allegedly playing with a toddler. Yadav was first assaulted by residents and then handed over to the police.

“Tests have revealed that the DNA found on the victims is not the same as Yadav’s. This means that the killer is someone else. Investigations are on in full steam and we will nab the culprit soon,” police said.
