Kasab practising karate in jail
Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab,who has been awarded the death penalty for his role in the 26/11 attacks,is biding his time at the high-security Arthur Road jail here by practising karate. Kasab exercises and practises karate to kill time. He appears to know the martial art very well,a jail official said. The official also said Kasab repeatedly tries to engage jail officials in conversation. However,security guards at the cell avoid speaking to him. He asks the guards as to where they are from,for how long have they been security guards and so on…, the official said. The Bombay High Court had on February 21 upheld the death sentence to Kasab.
BRs 2-crore IMC chair at Mumbai varsity
Indian Merchant Chamber (IMC) on Wednesday launched a Rs 2-crore chair in Mumbai University,dedicated to banking and finance. The chair is named after the ex-chairman of Dena bank,former president of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and IMC Praveenchandra Gandhi. A Mumbai varsity official said,The primary objective of this chair is to encourage applied and empirical research of high standards and will cater to research needs of the banking and finance sector with a view to gain an insight and broad perspective in these areas. Secondly,it will train and develop highly qualified individuals in field of banking and finance. Mumbai University has total 18 chairs,amounting to Rs 9.56 crore. However,the amount Rs 2 crore proposed for the IMC chair is the highest amount for a single chair amongst all .
Verdict reserved in Patekars cheque case
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday reserved its judgment in a case filed by actor Nana Patekar against director Raj Bharat after two cheques worth Rs 50 lakh and Rs 25 lakh given to the actor bounced. In 2002,Patekar was signed by Bharat for film Vadh. While Patekar was paid Rs 25 lakh as the signing amount,he was told that the remaining amount Rs 75 lakh will be paid to him after the movie is released. They,however,entered into an agreement that the movie will not be released until he is paid. Patekar alleged that he was paid with the two disputed cheques after which he consented to the release of the film but the cheques,however,bounced. After hearing the arguments in the case,Justice AA Sayed closed it for orders.
File pvt complaint against Salem: HC to Dossa
Dismissing the petition filed by Mustafa Dossa seeking an offence to be registered against extradited gansgter Abu Salem,the Bombay High Court asked Dossa to file a private complaint before a magistrate if the police do not book Salem. Dossa in his petition had alleged that the police were biased and they had refused to accept his written complaint against Salem. If the police have refused to register a case then the aggrieved person has the remedy of approaching a metropolitan magistrate with a private complaint. Dossa may do so, the HC observed.
The police in their affidavit had said that they did not act on Dossas complaint as according to investigations Salem had attacked Dossa in self defence.
