Two drunk businessmen were arrested after they fired several rounds in the air from their foreign-made pistols outside a restaurant on Link Road in Malad on Wednesday,leading to a panic among the locals,police said. “Dilip Bombaywala,38,and Pratik Boradia,42,were having drinks and lunch at Garden View restaurant on Wednesday afternoon. After lunch,they both stepped out of the hotel and took out the pistols and started firing in the air to show off,causing a panic among the public,” said acting senior police inspector P Prabhu. The police recovered a 6.36-bore pistol and another along with nine rounds from the duo. The police said the duo do not belong to any gang or terror organisation and didn’t fire with an intention to kill anyone.

EVM theft: Pune man’s custody extended

The police custody of Mukund Lagoo,who was arrested early last week for allegedly procuring an electronic voting machine (EVM) from a “source” and handing it over to Hyderabad-based researcher Hari Prasad,has been extended till September 25. Lagoo,a Pune-based social activist,was brought to Mumbai last week and taken into custody,claiming he was the one who procured the EVM. “Police said he was not the person who stole the EVM from the collector’s office. His custody was granted after the police claimed the main person is still at large,” said Lagoo’s advocate Niranjan Mundergi.

Man drowns at Girgaum chowpatty

A 31-year-old man drowned off Girgaum chowpatty early Thursday morning as he ventured into the waters after the Ganpati immersion,police said. The local fire brigade unit rushed to the spot and brought his body out. “Fire brigade officials rushed Satish Patil,a resident of Mazgaon,to JJ Hospital where he was declared dead after admission. Patil’s body was handed over to his family,” said a police official from the DB Marg police station,where a case of accidental death has been registered.

Film on Mother Teresa to be screened

As part of Mother Teresa’s birth centenary celebrations,NGO SIGNIS will screen documentary film ‘Mother Teresa’ at Rang Sharda auditorium in Bandra Reclamation at 6 pm on Saturday. Directed by Fabrizio Costa,the film stars English actress Olivia Hussey as Mother Teresa,and is set in India in the late 1940s,when Calcutta was torn by riots. Mercedes offers free bus to BEST

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has received a proposal from the Mercedes Benz company,offering to provide one of its bus free of charge for a month. “We are not spending anything. It is the company which is interested to provide us a bus for a month,” said BEST committee chairman Sanjay Potnis. A couple of weeks ago,the BEST committee had passed a proposal of introducing 50 Volvo AC buses in its fleet.
