A 19-year-old woman died after a stove in her kitchen exploded in the Mograwada chawl in Andheri east on Thursday afternoon. Sonali Kushav was trying to ignite the stove for cooking when the over-use of kerosene triggered the blast. The fire engulfed the kitchen and the curtain drapes and electric wiring caught fire that spread quickly trapping Kushav inside the house.

The blast took place at 3.15 pm and the fire brigade reached the spot at 3:30. Kushav was rushed to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle where she was declared dead. She suffered 100 per cent burns.

Teenager arrested for raping 4-yr-old

The Tilak Nagar police on Thursday arrested a 16-year-old boy for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl from the Tilak Nagar area. According to police,the boy resides in the same chawl as the victim and had lured her to his room on Wednesday afternoon while she had gone out to play. The police had earlier detained the 16-year-old on Wednesday after the girl’s parents registered a complaint and later placed him under arrest.

Police Inspector Vilas Shinde from the Tilak Nagar police station said,“As per the the victim’s parents,they came to know about the abuse on Wednesday afternoon when her mother found the girl at their neighbour’s place with the boy. The mother suspected foul play,and in her complaint alleged that the accused had molested their daughter.”

Illegal constructions demolished in Dahisar

As many as 71 illegal commercial structures were razed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in Dahisar in presence of heavy police security on Thursday. About 200 units of small shops within the 71 structures,made up of brick masonry or tin,were brought down with the help of four JCB machines,30 BMC officials and 80 police personnel. The shops that had come up illegally in the Ganpat Patil Nagar area of Dahisar west were issued notices by the civic body under the MRTP act more than a week back. Assistant municipal commissioner PM Masurkar said that despite initial opposition from shopkeepers the police presence helped the BMC in razing the structures.
