Antonios bolts from the blue

Pesi Shroff’s hopes of becoming the first trainer-jockey to win the Indian Derby were dashed as the all-conquering Set Alight was humbled by friendless Antonios in front of a roaring crowd of about 15,000 at the Mahalaxmi Race Course on Sunday.

Rank outsider humbles queen filly Set Alight to claim Indian Derby crown

Pesi Shroff’s hopes of becoming the first trainer-jockey to win the Indian Derby were dashed as the all-conquering Set Alight was humbled by friendless Antonios in front of a roaring crowd of about 15,000 at the Mahalaxmi Race Course on Sunday.

Antonios’ surprising win sustained the jinx of no favourite winning the prestigious race since the turn of the new millennium. A stunned crowd saw Antonios galloping from the outside to overwhelm leader Set Alight near home.

Jockey Malesh Narredu’s strategy of hitting the front well before the home stretch proved to be his undoing as despite having a clear run,the daughter of Razeen was found running short of gas at the all-important juncture. A 50/100 favourite – she simply failed to accelerate when challenged by fast finishing Antonios near 100 metres from winning post. The failure of pace setter Telstar in hitting the front probably forced Narredu to remain in second position throughout the race and then to take charge negotiating the final bend.

Before the race, most of the punters didn’t even care to look at Antonios as everyone thought it was a one-horse race. The public sentiment reflected in the odds as Antonios was well over 50/1 while Indian 2000 Gunieas winner Autonomy was second in demand at 7/1 while the rest were at longer odds.

When the race begun,Go Guzzi Go hit the front with Set Alight in second place followed by Abs Fabs,Juventus,Antonios,Dancing Dynamite Falcon Crest,Riuasat,Autonomy,Icebreaker and the rest.

They ran more or less in the same file nearing the final bend. As the runners came into public view from the stands,Narredu put Set Alight in charge. Soon Autonomy came in front to chase followed by Juventus and Icebreaker. But while Set Alight was looking like going towards the winning post in front comfortably,a stunned crowd saw Antonios flying from the outside to challenge Set Alight. Soon Antonios took charge near home and sailed away for a smashing victory.
