“We are convinced that Mateen and his associate were not present at the crime scene. But we still need to clarify why they confessed to the crime and gave us names of others too,” said a senior police officer. Salvi apparently served time in jail for an earlier offence around the same time as Mateen and could be an acquaintance.

Meanwhile,the Mumbai Police Crime Branch continued questioning informers. They have also sought details from the slain journalist’s family about a three-nation trip he had undertaken between April 28 and May 5.

“We are collecting every information we can get,” said the officer,adding,“There are some details that have also emerged from Mohammed Ali’s interrogation,which cannot be shared at the moment.”
