Anil Jaisinghani, alleged to be a bookie, is likely to walk out of jail after he was granted bail by the Bombay High Court on Tuesday in the last pending case against him.

Jaisinghani, who was on the run for many years, was arrested in March 2023, for allegedly trying to blackmail and extort Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He was granted bail in the case filed by the Malabar Hill police in September 2023 but he remained in custody in other cases.

The last pending case in which he was in judicial custody was the one filed by Saki Naka police in 2016, related to alleged forgery by use of a false number plate for a vehicle under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.

Jaisinghani, who is lodged in Taloja jail, will be released after the completion of bail formalities within the next few days. Lawyers Aabad Ponda and Swarali Joglekar submitted before the court that the case in which he was in custody related to an alleged fake number plate of a vehicle, where he was assisting another state’s police to nab an accused in a case.

Earlier, while arguing for bail in another case, his lawyers had told the court that there were 17 cases pending against him, of which most were either withdrawn or already compounded through settlement.

The court was also told that he was granted bail by the Madhya Pradesh High Court in September 2023 in a case filed in the state and in another case filed in Goa, too.

In July 2023, he was also granted bail in the case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Ahmedabad. His lawyers told the court that some of the cases were closed before his arrest by the police in March 2023. Police had claimed that he was on the run for at least seven years with complaints against him of alleged cheating, forgery and illegal betting. After the Malabar Hill police case, Jaisinghani remained in custody for a case filed by Azad Maidan and Saki Naka.

In March, the Malabar Hill police filed an FIR against Jaisinghani and his daughter Aniksha on Amruta’s complaint saying Aniksha, posing as a designer, gained access to Amruta in 2021 and insisted that she wear clothes and jewellery provided by her at events.

Subsequently, Aniksha allegedly offered a bribe of Rs 1 crore to Amruta, seeking her intervention in dropping the cases against her father, police said. After Amruta Fadnavis refused and blocked her phone, Aniksha threatened to leak her videos and sought Rs 10 crore as extortion money, the complaint said.

The trial in the case has not begun. Aniksha and her uncle Nirmal were granted bail last year.
