Amboli police on Friday night arrested a 33-year-old housewife for allegedly beating and inflicting burns on her 10-year-old maid.
The accused,Urvashi Dhanurkar, was booked under the Juvenile Justice Act and was produced in the Bandra court on Saturday. The court granted her bail.
Neighbours and residents of the Royal Classic building at Andheri, where Dhanurkar stays, had spotted the girl crying at the buildings lawn on Friday. They spotted black rings under her eyes as well as burns on her arms.
The residents informed us about the girls condition, after which we arrested Dhanurkar. The girl was in a trauma but was able to tell us that Dhanurkar had brought her from Amravati two months ago and had promised to enroll her in a school. But,she was forced to do household chores and was often deprived of food.
Last evening, she had tried to eat something from the refrigerator when an angry Dhanurkar grabbed her hand and burnt it using a pair of hot tongs. Thats when the child had come to the lawn, said senior police inspector Kailash Ghamande.
The girl was staying with her widowed mother earlier.
The chairman of the building,Bindu Bhosale, said,Initially, the girl was hesitant to reveal anything. When we confronted the accused, she said the wounds were caused by a bee sting and are the side-effects of medicines.
The accused, however, claimed that the girl had behavioural problems. She has psychological problems. She is a kleptomaniac and often lies. I always treated her like a daughter but her behaviour often went out of control. I am just a victim of circumstance, said Dhanurkar.
