“Met Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi today. We discussed many issues in detail. Everything is fine… there is no need to worry,” Raut said.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) had warned Rahul against “insulting” Savarkar following a controversy over his recent ‘My surname is Gandhi, not Savarkar’ remark.
Raut met the Gandhis at the Congress office in Parliament. It was Rahul’s first visit to the office after being disqualified as an MP following his conviction in a defamation case.
“I met Rahul ji and Sonia ji. We had a discussion for about 45 minutes over several issues of the country and mostly on the issues related to Maharashtra. I had spoken to Rahul ji over the phone on Tuesday and it was decided to meet today. I did not know that Sonia ji would also be there but we met. It was a good meeting,” Raut said on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Raut had said that differences over the Savarkar issue have been solved. “We had raised our concerns on Savarkar two days ago. We did not attend the meeting at Mallikarjun Kharge’s house. But there is and will be Opposition unity in Maharashtra as well as the country. We have got the results of the concerns we have expressed,” Raut had said on Wednesday morning.
Earlier on Sunday, at a rally in Malegaon, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray had warned Rahul Gandhi against insulting Savarkar. With the issue escalating, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar stepped in, urging Congress leaders to tone down attacks on the Hindutva ideologue.
