On Sunday evening,Mumbai and its 1500 plus film lovers had a date with Hollywood superstar,Tom Cruise, who promoted his latest flick Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol at Imax,Wadala. The incessant chants of Tom Cruise! could almost make anyone believe that it was a football stadium, instead of a film theatre, despite the barricades and heavy security.
The star arrived trendily late by 45 minutes but once he made it to the Red Carpet,he made the next one-and-a- half-hours count. Mumbai got a full blast of the famous Cruise charm. He signed posters,T-shirts and autographed books, posed for the papparazi and accepted knick-knacks from his fans. One of the gifts was a kada from a Sikh gentleman; Cruise happily told everyone that he loved his new bangle. The stars entourage got into the mix too. On his instructions, they took over as official photographers of the evening. Tom was sweet. He realised that we are having a tough time clicking his pictures,so he asked his team to take our camera phones and take our picture with him. This way, everyone had a picture with him, gushed a Cruise fanatic.
The Hollywood star was happy to share little deets about his latest movie. About his famous rappelling sequence down the 2,716 ft Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai,he joked,I dont fear heights but I fear falling. The high note of his trip was his visit to the Taj Mahal. Ive always wanted to see the Taj. When I finally saw it,I had to pinch myself to believe it, he said.
His Ghost Protocol co-star Paula Patton joined him on the Red Carpet walk. Anil Kapoor was the perfect co-star,always two steps behind Cruise, never wanting to steal his thunder. The fans though gave a fair share of love to Kapoor too,who was greeted with cries of One two ka four and Nayak! Soon it was Kapoors chance to play doting dad to daughter Sonam, who was around on a work assignment. Viacom 18 (representing Paramount Studios) crafted a neat tie in with Ghost Protocol for their upcoming film,Players,an adaptation of The Italian Job. Sonam accompanied her co-stars Abhishek Bachchan,Neil Nitin Mukesh and director duo Abbas-Mustan to the event. We must wait till December 16 for Ghost Protocol. If the response at the Mumbai screening is any indication,it has the meat to bring Cruise back in top form. Incidentally, the films climax is set in Mumbai with action around the Queens Necklace,CST station and a solid shot of even the (in)famous Mumbai traffic.
