After a dip and return to normalcy, mercury heads south again

After temperatures hovered around normal for a few days, the mercury dipped again, this time to 13.5 degrees Celsius on Monday in Santacruz while Colaba recorded 17.2 degrees.

After temperatures hovered around normal for a few days, the mercury dipped again, this time to 13.5 degrees Celsius on Monday in Santacruz while Colaba recorded 17.2 degrees. The Met department said a slight drop in temperatures is expected over the next one or two days.

On January 12,temperatures finally settled around normal after a chilly start to the week, recording a minimum temperature of 16.8 degrees in Santacruz as compared to its normal of 16 degrees and Colaba recorded 19.4 degrees around its normal of 19 degrees. But from the next day,the general trend was a gradual fall in mercury levels with the minimum temperature in the suburbs on Sunday falling to 13.8 degrees, while in the island city fell to 18.3 degrees and both decreased further on Monday.

Maximum temperatures, which had shot to 33.5 and 33.8 degrees in Colaba and Santacruz respectively last week, dropped to 27.8 degrees and 28.9 degrees respectively on Monday.

The weather department attributed this decrease in temperatures to a western disturbance in the north. “A western disturbance in the north combined with the wind pattern in the city being north easterly has lead to the recent fall in city temperatures,” said V K Rajeev, director,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Weather officials expect a slight drop in temperatures in the next few days. “The disturbance is now moving away and whenever that happens,an associated disturbance forms in the south. This can lead to more fluctuations in temperatures in the coming days. There may possibly be a fall by a degree in the next one or two days,” he said.
