Signalling both a generational shift and its intent to fight the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections under the leadership of Aaditya Thackeray, Shiv Sena (UBT) on Tuesday placed the MLA and son of party president Uddhav Thackeray at the forefront of its civic poll campaign.

At a meeting of party office-bearers in Worli, Aaditya delivered his first solo address, highlighting the party’s achievements in the BMC.

“It is time to stop the vote chor, note chor and credit chor. It is time to stop those who have destroyed Mumbai. It is time to claim credit for things we have done. We are here to keep Mumbai for Mumbaikars,” Thackeray said.

Announcing Karun Dakhvala, te Abhimanane Sanguya (We did it, let’s tell this with pride) as the party’s poll theme, Thackeray made a presentation on the Sena’s tenure in the BMC since 1997, when it first came to power.

“We have taken the BMC from Rs 650 crore deficit in 1997 to Rs 92,000 crore fixed deposits in 2022,” he said, recalling the civic body’s work in education, health, transport and water supply.

Thackeray also called all former Mumbai mayors onto the stage as a mark of gratitude for their contribution to the city.

Referring to the current state of Mumbai’s roads, he said their condition had deteriorated because no work was undertaken and nothing was being done under the administrator.

“I am telling you all about this because these are our achievements and we must tell the people with pride. We have to speak about it aloud,” he said.

Repeatedly claiming credit for projects such as the coastal road, Thackeray asked party workers to counter BJP claims. Displaying photographs from the early stages of the project, he said, “Do you see Fadnavis in this photo? Maybe he is hiding somewhere.”
