A World Class Operation

Why this railway hospital is so popular for joint replacement surgeries

Karamjeet Kaur,73,having been home-bound for several years due to a knee joint deformity coupled with being overweight, can now not only walk but even do the Bhangra at her grandson’s wedding. Kaur had a knee replacement surgery at Jagjivan Ram Hospital,a Western Railway facility that’s also open to patients not associated with the railways. Kaur’s is not a solitary case. The Jagjivan Ram Hospital has conducted several complex knee replacement surgeries at their state ofthe art orthopedic and joint replacement operation theatres.

Now,the hospital has added one more feather in its cap with the recent inauguration of a computer-aided navigation system especially for knee replacement surgeries,Chief Medical Director (WR) Dr V J Mahadik says Jagjivan Ram Hospital has now become a learning centre for joint replacement surgery with doctors from India and abroad visiting for training. “Around 300 joint replacement surgeries are being conducted in this hospital every year. The hospital is mainly for railway employees, but if we have time and space,we do surgeries for others too,” Dr Mahadik adds.

With its stainless steel paneled interiors,ultra-clean air, fibereglass seamless floor, sterilization machines for sterilizing each and every thing in the operation theatre,a knee-operated scrubbing machine and a zero bacteria operation theatre environment, the facility is as good as any in the world.

“Jagjivan Ram Hospital is the first government organization in the country to have this facility of computer assisted navigation system for knee replacement surgeries, which assists the surgeon to improve accuracy and precision. It provides superior restoration of mechanical limb alignment and prosthetic component orientation compared to conventional technique resulting in the longer survival of the artificial joint. Till now we have done around 22 knee replacements using this system,” says Dr JP Jain, head of the hospital’s orthopedic department.

Till now, around 2,000 joint replacement surgeries have been conducted here under the supervision of Dr Jain, with a success rate of 99.9 per cent.

About the computer-aided navigation system,Dr AK Vyas, medical director of the hospital, says it’s like an on-screen guide. “During the operation, whether the alignment is correct or not, this system will tell you on screen. It also tells you how much bone needs to be cut during implantation of artificial knee. If accuracy is greater, then durability of the artificial joint is increased as well.”
