A ‘we-did-it-ourself’ garden

A small group turns a space littered with garbage near their home into a garden.

When those who should do it don’t,just go ahead and do it yourself.

That’s just what a group of 10 college students and working professionals from Bandra West did. Instead of waiting for the civic body to turn a vacant space near their locality into a garbage-free area, the Rizvi Complex residents turned the place opposite Carter Road that was littered with garbage into a garden. The eight-by-ten square feet vacant space has turned into what the groups describes as “a perfect place” to spend evenings. People of the area and students of a nearby college frequent the garden they have created.

“We have grown up in the locality and have spent evenings here. The BMC planted just a mango tree here. The area was dirty,” said Dhruv Vankar of Rizvi Complex who had gathered his friends to build the garden.

The group has over the past year planted roses and fruit trees in the 8 feet X 10 feet space turning it into a perfect place to spend evenings.

Every day,the group can be seen watering the plants and cleaning the place.

Many of them are students of Rizvi College next to the garden.

“The place is frequented by college students wanting to spend some time relaxing. It feels nice when we see the garden being utilised by people. Many senior citizens have begun spending time there in the mornings and evenings,” said Vankar,a car dealer.

The group plans to build other gardens in the area and beautify Carter Road.

“We intend planting mango and tamarind trees in the neighbourhood,” added Vankar.
