An 82-year old woman died when part of the ceiling of a four-storey MHADAs cessed building collapsed at South Mumbais Parsi Colony on Tuesday. The structure,Soona Building belongs to a trust headed by Dinyar Jamshedji and is part of the Zoroastrian Building Estate Fund that houses 26 such other buildings.
Boman Bharucha,a resident of the building,was on the ground floor when the the slab collapsed. As she was immobile due to an illness she could not rush from the spot and succumbed to injuries,said a civic official. The kitchen slab of an apartment on the second floor collapsed which also led to the collapse of the first floor slab, said a fire brigade official. The victim was taken to Bhatia Hospital where doctors declared her dead, he added.
The building,which houses 12 families,has been evacuated and those affected been give alternative accommodation. Also,MHADA engineers will prepare a detailed report of the structural safety of the building and the extent of repairs it needs,said BJPs Mangal Prabhat Lodha,MLA from Tardeo.
A MHADA official said,The building had been given a notice two years back stating that the structure was dilapidated and needed repairs,however residents refused MHADAs help claiming that they will repair the building on their own. Two months ago,residents approached MHADA seeking repairs, he said. The MHADA has appointed an architect for the repair work and had planned to start the repairs of the building soon,said another official.
