8 held for stealing Rs 18 lakh from Sion house on pretext of ‘I-T search’

Mumbai police Tuesday arrested eight persons for allegedly posing as Income Tax officers and escaping with Rs 18 lakh cash from the house of a 29-year-old woman in Sion.

The police said that the incident took place on November 26, when four accused went to her house and alleged that they were Income Tax officers.

An officer said, “The four showed their identity cards and under the pretext of conducting a house search, they found Rs 18 lakh cash and claimed ing that they were unaccounted, the four accused escaped with it.”

The police said that the complainant was saving the money for her sister’s wedding.

However after she reported the matter at the police station, a case of personation, conspiracy, cheating and forgery was registered.

“We managed to locate the registration number of the vehicle in which the four accused had come following which one of them was identified,” said an officer.

The accused identified as Rajaram Mangle was arrested after he confessed to the crime. The roles of seven other persons were later identified following which they were also traced and arrested.
