‘40% students apply after online admissions end’

While students continue to rush for securing seats in junior colleges, academicians and principals claim that nearly 40 per cent of them end up applying for admissions only after the online process is over.

While students continue to rush for securing seats in junior colleges, academicians and principals claim that nearly 40 per cent of them end up applying for admissions only after the online process is over. Principals of junior colleges say every year they get requests from students seeking admissions in the post-online admission period.

Dr Krishna Patil, principal,Siddharth College,Fort, said of the 3.75 lakh students who passed SSC exams this year, only 1.92 lakh registered for the online admission process. “Even if we assume that 80,000 students from the remaining 1.83 lakh have taken admissions for diploma or polytechnic courses and another 50,000 through the minority or other quota, the remaining 50,000-odd are still waiting for online admissions to get over. They will start hunting for seats in the college of their choice after that,” said Patil.

Another principal from a college in the western suburbs said this was not a new trend. “Many students are scared that they might get confused and end up getting admission in a wrong college. The online process does not satisfy many and they keep trying for a seat in a college of their choice till the last merit is announced. Thus, students opt for the offline process. I am yet to come across any college that can claim that all their seats have been filled up after the completion of three rounds of admission,” the principal said.

Dr T Shiware, principal,KPB Hinduja College,Charni Road, who is a member of the junior college online admission core committee that is supervising the process this year, said efforts were being made to resolve the issue,“This has been the case in the past but the deputy directors office is trying find out the reason for this and ensure that all students register for the online admission process. Minor changes in the process can be expected from next year,” said Shiware.
